"J-Jackalkit?" His voice was stuck in his throat as his sister's body laid eerily still, her once warm firy coat cold and vacant of life. "D-Dad! Something's wrong with Jackalkit!" He cried out to his father. Jackalgrowl tenderly wrapped her tail around his body as Fawnstone came to look, his face falling with grief. He couldn't remember much from that day, but Jackalkit wasn't the only of his siblings that died that day. He was then pronounced apprentice. Funny.. it didn't feel as great as it should have without them.. without all of his kin by his side. But he pressed on, he had to, for them. "You have to trust me!" Fawnstone's desperate wail called through the clearing of the gathering. It was Finchpaw's first gathering, and it was already going to hell "This plague is going to ruin us.. all of us, if we don't leave!" "And run, like cowards?!" Heronstar hissed back angrily, the fur on his spine rippling. Even Skystar seemed uncertain "Fawnstone, I understand that you have lost dear kits of yours.. but it's nothing our experienced medicine cats cannot handle. We can't leave, not while leaf-bare is only moons away." Defeat seemed imminent for Fawnstone's plan, but a moon after, they left anyway. Atop a mountain, dark clouds cast overhead, and the traveling cats were growing desperate "Dad, I'm hungry!" Stormkit complained, flicking his tail in annoyance. Pebblekit agreed, albeit a little quieter. However Finchpaw kept quiet for once, concentrating on Climbing the steep slopes. Jackalgrowl sighed, smiling worriedly over at her mate "Fawnstone, I can go out hunting with some others, tell the others to rest for a little, we'll be back by sundown." Fawnstone gave her a concerned glance, before nodding, guiding the travelers over to a cave nearby as he watched his mate take a patrol into the distance. "Are you kidding me, we can't leave!" Fawnstone's voice echoed throughout the cave as Furzestorm and Milkberry cornered him "She isn't back yet! She.. she could be out there still-" "Face it, mouse-brain!" Furzestorm hissed back "The snowstorm cleared four days ago! She's dead!" "No she's not!" Finchpaw had never seen his father so broken down. The once proud deputy shook on his paws, his voice wavering as he stood on the brink of tears "She- She's strong, she'd never.. never die!" Milkberry looked more tenderly at the tone, trying in a sweet voice "Of course she's not but.. we can't wait on her and the others forever. We have to go, or we'll all die out here. She'll understand, I'm sure. She knows which direction we're going, right?" Milkberry showed the shaken tom a soft smile, but he only looked toward the ground. Finchpaw could only watch unusually quietly. "Dad, am I ever going to see mom again?" I asked him as I laid in my new nest in our new camp, staring up at my father with curious eyes. I saw how that struck him. It was a harsh change from an easy chat about hunting techniques. He sighed, turning his head towards the sunset sky "I.. don't know, Finchpaw." He mumbled, his voice thick with grief. He turned back towards his son, giving a tart smile "When I go get my nine lives, I'll tell you, okay?" "Fawnstone!" the medicine cat called out "We have to go!" Fawnstone nodded, touching his nose to Finchpaw's head as he murmured a soft "Goodnight, son. I love you." As he padded after the medicine cat with a bowed head. Finchpaw awoke to harsh prodding in his side. He groggily opened his eye, noting the soft beams of dawn, and then the beaming face of his father. He seemed.. different. It was a different air, a soft tinge of cave dew maybe? Or was it the leaderly aura? "She's alive!" his father smiled from ear to ear "Jackalgrowl.. she isn't in StarClan!" it was from that moment Finchpaw knew. There was hope. |
